About Champion Energy

Champion Energy is a Houston-based electricity provider and part of Calpine, one of the largest power generators in the United States. Champion has served Texas electricity customers for more than two decades and has built its reputation around straightforward electricity plans and customer service.

Champion is known for keeping its plans relatively simple. It builds its lineup around straightforward fixed rates and avoids many of the tiered pricing and usage-credit structures used by other providers. Champion also offers 24/7 customer support, giving customers access to a live representative whenever they need help.

Champion Energy Plans and How They Work

Champion keeps its lineup deliberately short, so there is less to sort through than at most providers.

Fixed-Rate Plans — Fixed Rate

What it is: One energy rate that stays the same for the whole contract, on terms from a few months up to three years. This is Champion’s main product and most customers end up on one.

What to consider: Fixed rates are easier to compare because there are no usage credits or pricing windows to account for. Compare the total rate and contract length with other fixed-rate plans.

Solar Buyback — Solar Buyback

What it is: A plan for homes with rooftop panels that pays you bill credits for the excess electricity your system sends back to the grid.

What to consider: The important numbers are the rate you pay for electricity and the credit you receive for excess solar sent back to the grid. Compare both based on how much electricity your home uses and exports.

Month-to-Month — Variable Rate

What it is: A plan with no fixed term, where the rate can move from month to month.

What to consider: You get flexibility without a long-term contract, but the rate can change from month to month. It makes the most sense when flexibility matters more than locking in a price.

For any plan, the Electricity Facts Label shows how the price is calculated at different usage levels.

Champion Energy Reviews

Power Texas rating: 4 out of 5 stars

We give Champion Energy 4 out of 5 stars mainly for how little there is to go wrong. Its plans avoid the usage credits and tiered rates that catch people out elsewhere, so the rate you compare is close to the rate you pay, and its Texas-based support team answers the phone around the clock rather than only in business hours. Being part of a large power generator also puts it on steadier footing than a small independent retailer. The tradeoff is choice: if you want free nights, time-of-use pricing or a plan built around solar and EV charging together, Champion’s short lineup will feel limiting, and it publishes no satisfaction guarantee of the kind some competitors offer.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas tracks complaints involving retail electricity providers. You can view current provider complaint information directly from the PUCT.

Switching to or from Champion Energy

You can switch to Champion when starting service at a new address or when your current contract ends. If you are still under contract elsewhere, check that contract for an early termination fee first. Champion does not advertise help with another provider’s fee or a trial window, so plan the timing around your existing contract rather than counting on a way out of it.

If you are leaving Champion, check your contract for its end date and any early termination fee, since leaving a fixed term early normally carries one. Moving house can be treated differently from simply shopping around, so confirm how your contract handles a move before you cancel.

Why Texans Use Power Texas

We make electricity shopping easier

Texas electricity plans can be difficult to compare. Power Texas brings rates, providers, plan details, and helpful information together so you can understand your options and choose an electricity plan with confidence.

Whether you want to shop on your own or have questions along the way, our goal is to make finding electricity simpler.

Our recommendations are independent

Power Texas may receive compensation from electricity providers when customers enroll through our marketplace. However, commissions, advertising relationships, and other commercial arrangements do not determine our editorial content or recommendations.

Our recommendations are based on our independent assessment of the Texas electricity market and the information we believe is most useful to consumers.

Champion Energy FAQs

Champion Energy is a retail subsidiary of Calpine, one of the largest power generators in the United States. That means the company selling you the plan is part of a group that also generates electricity, which is unusual among Texas retail providers.
No. Champion deliberately builds its lineup around straightforward fixed rates and says it avoids tiered rates and usage credits. If you want a plan where the advertised rate depends on hitting a monthly usage target, Champion is not the provider selling it.
Champion works with every delivery utility in the competitive Texas market: Oncor, CenterPoint Energy, AEP Texas Central, AEP Texas North, Texas-New Mexico Power and Lubbock Power & Light. Availability still depends on your service address, since not every address in Texas can choose a provider.
Champion says its agents can report an outage to your utility on your behalf and pass on status updates. It is still faster to call your utility directly, because the utility owns the lines and is the one restoring power.
Yes. Champion offers a solar buyback option for homes with rooftop panels, which credits the excess electricity your system sends back to the grid. Champion publishes its own solar buyback rate history, so you can see how the credit has moved over time.
