View All Plans →Gexa Energy has been serving Texas electricity customers since the competitive market opened in 2002. Based in Houston, Gexa has served more than 1.8 million Texas households and is part of NextEra Energy, one of the largest energy companies in the country.
Gexa offers a broad selection of plans for different types of households, including traditional fixed-rate plans, bill-credit options, solar buyback and plans designed for EV owners. New customers also get Gexa’s 60-day Happiness Guarantee, which gives them some flexibility to change Gexa plans if their first choice isn’t the right fit.
Gexa sells a wide lineup, but four structures cover most of what a household will actually choose between.
What it is: Gexa’s signature structure: you lock a rate for 12 or 24 months and receive a usage credit in any billing cycle where your consumption reaches a specified range.
What to consider: The plan can look inexpensive when your usage qualifies for the credit, but cost more in months when it doesn’t. Check how bill-credit plans are structured against your own usage before signing.
What it is: A flat energy charge held for the term, offered on lengths from 12 up to 36 months.
What to consider: Your energy rate doesn’t depend on reaching a specific usage level, making the plan easier to compare with other fixed-rate options.
What it is: A plan for homes with rooftop panels that credits the excess generation your system exports to the grid.
What to consider: Compare the buyback credit and terms based on how much excess solar your home typically sends back to the grid.
What it is: Plans aimed at households charging an electric vehicle at home, where a large share of usage is both heavy and schedulable.
What to consider: Look at when the plan rewards EV charging and whether those hours fit when you normally charge at home.
Renewable sourcing is a plan-level choice at Gexa rather than a lineup-wide default: it matches 100% of the energy sold under qualifying residential plans with renewable energy certificates. For any plan, the Electricity Facts Label shows how the price is calculated at different usage levels.

Gexa says it serves every deregulated area of Texas, which makes it one of the easiest providers to find wherever you live. That covers Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Corpus Christi, McAllen and Lubbock.
Gexa works with all five delivery utilities in the competitive market: Oncor, CenterPoint Energy, AEP Texas, Texas-New Mexico Power and Lubbock Power & Light. Gexa sells your electricity plan, while your local utility delivers the power and handles outages. Enter your ZIP code to see Gexa plans available at your address.
Where you should go depends on whether you are shopping, already a customer, or without power.
If you are still choosing a plan, start by comparing the Gexa plans and rates available for your address — what you can buy depends on your service address, so begin with your ZIP code. You can also shop directly at gexaenergy.com.
Gexa residential customer service is 866-961-9399, open Monday to Friday 7am–8pm and Saturday 8am–5pm Central, with self-service chat around the clock. Sign in to Gexa MyAccount.
Do not call Gexa to report an outage. Report it to your local utility, which owns the lines and restores service — Gexa publishes each utility’s outage number on its own outage page.
Power Texas rating: 4 out of 5 stars
We give Gexa Energy 4 out of 5 stars for longevity and reach: it has sold electricity in Texas since the market opened in 2001, it covers all five delivery utilities, and it backs a broad lineup with a mobile app, usage tools and a Happiness Guarantee that lets a new customer change plans penalty-free inside 60 days. The tradeoffs are that its headline plans lean on usage credits, which only pay off if your monthly consumption reliably clears the qualifying range, and that renewable sourcing applies to qualifying plans rather than the whole lineup — so the plan you pick matters more here than the brand does.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas tracks complaints involving retail electricity providers. You can view current provider complaint information directly from the PUCT.
You can switch to Gexa when starting service at a new address or when your current contract ends. If you are still under contract elsewhere, check that contract for an early termination fee first. Gexa’s Happiness Guarantee is worth understanding before you rely on it: it lets you move to another eligible Gexa plan without a penalty within 60 days of activation, which protects you against picking the wrong Gexa plan rather than against leaving Gexa.
If you are leaving Gexa, check your contract for its end date and any early termination fee, since leaving a fixed term early normally carries one. Moving house can be treated differently from simply shopping around, so confirm how your contract handles a move before you cancel.
