About Reliant Energy

Reliant is one of the largest and most established electricity providers in Texas, serving millions of homes and businesses across the state. The Houston-based company is part of NRG Energy, one of the largest energy companies in the U.S.

Reliant offers a broad selection of electricity plans along with 24/7 customer support, a mobile app and online tools for managing your account and tracking energy use. It also offers home services and products beyond electricity, including AC and heating protection, generators and solar, giving customers the option to manage more of their home energy needs with one company.

Reliant Energy Plans and How They Work

Reliant offers several plan structures, from traditional fixed rates to plans that provide free electricity during certain hours or days.

Secure Advantage — Fixed Rate

What it is: One rate at every hour of the day, held for the length of the contract. Reliant positions this as its no-frills option for households that would rather not think about timing.

What to consider: With no free periods or usage requirements, this plan is straightforward to compare with other fixed-rate options. Focus on the total rate and contract length.

Free Overnight — Free Nights

What it is: Electricity is free every night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., every night of the year, with a higher daytime rate paying for it.

What to consider: This plan works best if you can shift a meaningful amount of electricity use to the free overnight hours. If most of your usage happens during the day, the higher daytime rate can outweigh the savings from free nights.

Flextra Credits — Time of Use

What it is: Instead of a fixed free window, you get free electricity on your two highest-use days each week, and Reliant works out which days those were.

What to consider: The plan can work well if your electricity use varies significantly from day to day. If your usage is fairly consistent throughout the week, the free-day benefit may be less valuable.

Apartment plans — Fixed Rate

What it is: A fixed-rate plan built for smaller spaces with lower, steadier usage, aimed at renters and apartment dwellers.

What to consider: Compare the plan at your expected monthly usage, especially if you use less than 1,000 kWh. A plan designed for apartments may look very different at 500 kWh than at the standard 1,000 kWh comparison point.

Clear Flex — Variable Rate

What it is: A month-to-month plan with no fixed term, where the rate can move from one month to the next.

What to consider: You get the flexibility to stay month-to-month, but your electricity rate can change. This is generally more useful for short-term needs than for someone looking to lock in a predictable rate.

For any plan, the Electricity Facts Label shows how the price is calculated at different usage levels.

Reliant Energy Reviews

Power Texas rating: 4 out of 5 stars

We give Reliant Energy 4 out of 5 stars for its broad plan selection and the services that surround the plan. Few Texas providers offer this many different structures, including traditional fixed rates, free nights, free days and apartment-focused options. Reliant also offers strong app and account-management tools, 24/7 customer support, and the backing of NRG Energy, one of the largest energy companies in the U.S. The main tradeoff is that some of Reliant’s more specialized plans require your usage to line up with the plan structure to deliver their best value.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas tracks complaints involving retail electricity providers. You can view current provider complaint information directly from the PUCT.

Switching to or from Reliant Energy

You can switch to Reliant when your current electricity contract ends or when you need service at a new address. If you switch before your current contract ends, check whether your provider will charge an early termination fee. Reliant does not currently advertise an early termination fee reimbursement for customers switching from another provider. Reliant does offer same-day service at eligible addresses when enrollment is completed early enough in the day.

If you are already a Reliant customer and are moving, you can transfer your service to the new address rather than canceling and starting over. If you are switching from Reliant to another provider, check your contract end date and any applicable early termination fee before making the change.

Reliant Energy FAQs

It is a time-of-use plan that makes your electricity free every night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. You pay a higher rate during the day to fund those free hours, so it works best if you can run laundry, dishwashers or EV charging overnight.
Flextra Credits gives you free electricity on your two highest-use days each week rather than at a set time of day. Reliant identifies those days for you, so it suits households whose heaviest days move around instead of following a fixed schedule.
Yes. Reliant sells an apartment plan aimed at smaller spaces with lower, steadier electricity use. It is a fixed-rate plan, so the rate does not change with how much you use, which suits a home where usage does not swing much month to month.
Reliant serves the competitive parts of Texas across five regions it defines as Greater Houston, DFW and North Texas, West Texas, Central Texas and South Texas. It works with the Oncor, CenterPoint Energy, AEP Texas, Texas-New Mexico Power and Lubbock Power & Light delivery utilities.
Reliant offers home add-ons that most Texas providers do not, including AC and heat protection, plumbing and surge protection, whole-home generators, solar installation and a smart-home bundle. These are separate products with their own costs, so treat them as extras rather than part of your electricity rate.
